In order to impress a prospective employer your CV must be clear, neat & concise. The most important thing is to clearly show how you meet the criteria of the job. Here are some tips to consider:
1. You don't have to tell the selector everything.
One of the reasons why CVs might fail to impress is because they are too long. You need only give the prospective client enough information to let them decide that they want to meet you.
2. Make the CV comprehensible and easy to read.
Your CV should be as 'user friendly' as possible. Use lots of space so the text is easy to see. Where possible, write in bullet points & use simple statements. Include details of the companies that you worked for & what you did there. Use a clear typeface to make it easy to read.
3. Use the past tense.
(a) By using the past tense you don't have to keep using the word 'I' because you could leave it out
and replace it with an asterisk or a bullet.
(b) Indent your achievements on the page so that they stand out more.
4. Only include relevant information.
Some CVs include Passport Numbers, Medical Card Numbers, Clock card Numbers - all irrelevant information- other CVs give details of children, all their date of births and where each was born. This is of no interest to the client!
5. Be professional.
Selection & recruitment is a serious business. Recruiters generally dislike the use of humour in a CV because their own job depends on how successful they are at picking up the right people.
6. Do not include a photograph.
Our primal instincts have taught us to look at another person and quickly form an opinion about that person right away. We think yes/no, good/bad, and like/dislike. Opinion's form very quickly on just visual information so unless you are in the top 5% for traditional good looks and are photogenic, you are likely to score badly if you include a photograph.
7. Be unique.
Don't put down too many interests otherwise the employer might think that you will not have any time for work! How do you spend your disposable income or your free tells the potential employer a great deal about you, your values, your motivation and in some cases your intelligence.
